A conservatory is a room that has a glass roof and glass walls. It is typically connected to a house. Conservatories have come a long way though various periods of architectural perspective. From its beginning as orangery and to house rare seedlings for propagation purposes due to frost during harsh winter seasons, it now has morphed into a temperature controlled and multipurpose living space for wealthy people.
It has become a lifestyle statement. For instance, a rich and famous guy may want to install one in his cosmopolitan penthouse in order to create a dazzling alternative space for business entertainment purposes. He may need a conservatory installed in the garden of his manor, with a 360 degree view of the hills, for purposes of expanding his pricey flora and fauna collection. As well, he may need a sliding door type installed on the patio of his Mediterranean facing villa in Italy, so he could convert it as enclosed party space anytime.
For the less affluent, the need for conservatories may vary to a certain degree. For instance, they may want to have one as their sun room to grow ornamental plants, as alternative space for family breakfast, and optional area for occasional candle lit dinners. A middle income family may simply want to fill in a small corner to create extra space in their house.
Current designs and interpretations vary. They can be chic, ultra modern, standard, traditional and mixed. They are normally grouped into the categories of period or design based. Period designs include Orangery, Edwardian, Victorian, and Georgian. Among common Design based include Lean To, Domed, P Shaped, Lantern, T Shaped, Gable, Sliding Door, Corner infill and Double Hipped.
The period styles are typified by the prevailing architectural designs or inspirations during that particular era. The Georgian style is all about accuracy, symmetry, and proportion. Victorian is known for its apex roof and for having five or more sides. Edwardian design is primarily shaped as square or rectangular and has a flat front and high sloping roof. Orangery style is more of having a flat roof and fusion of any other style.
Design based types are classified by their distinctive characteristics. They may also be inspired by newer architectural designs and practicality. Only the most common sub-categories discussed as below are discussed for purposes of this article.
Gable is typified by its triangular in shape and steep sleek lines crossing the ridge of its roof as in a star burst. Domed is obviously identified for its dome shape roof. Lean To has a square shape with a flat sloping downward roof for rainwater flow and one of its sides is attached to the property. P-Shaped is a combination of Lean To and a Victorian where the vertical line in P is annexed to the house and the semi circle in P can be a Victorian cut to join P Shaped. Akin to P-Shaped is T-Shaped. The difference being the side attached to the property extends beyond the edge of P creating corner space. Lantern styles are identified by its two tier roofing.
Custom made or bespoke conservatories are preferred by the moneyed. There are Do it yourself designs suitable for the adventurous and less affluent. In both, there is a certain flexibility to combine period or design based categories.
