Just how not to approach your next hiking trip

Now with the appearance of July you could say that summer is now in complete bloom. And what better way to take pleasure in summer than with that ultimate of summertime entertainments – going to some other part of the continent you are not comfortable with in order to live in a tent and eat either burned or hardly cooked meals. In addition to this, enjoy the magic of getting your water from a faucet outside (if you are lucky) rather than from the familiar and convenient to use sink in your home. And let us not ignore the miracles of arising in the middle of the night to grope around for a flashlight so you can walk through the dark unknown to a frigid unlit toilet, sometimes even of the kind that is not even more than a straightforward hole in the ground. Without a doubt, it is time for that wonder of wonders – camping!

I must confess to taking pleasure in camping, always have. When I was a youngster we would all look forward to that two week family vacation in the summer. Months before my Dad would grab the roadmaps of the border states and begin to have a discussion with my Mother about the numerous value of the Oregon Coast compared to the mountains of Washington. They normally would send away for a number of pamphlets and look at tons of campgrounds when making the selection. Needless to say, today it is all basically a matter of pulling up a handful of queries on the web to see which State Parks are actually obtainable for camping. If you are living in California, as I do, you will have to search a bit deeper than most unless of course you made a booking at the very least a year in upfront. I know some sites that open up for reservations on the same day each and every year and are reserved solid within a handful of hours for the complete season.

That said, I nevertheless sensed a small thrill when a close friend of my own and I made the decision that this coming year we definitely were going to camp together. We had spoken of this a year ago, but in some way neither of us ever got around to taking care of it therefore we never went. However this year, I am inspired to find us a camping site and a weekend getaway. Our initial choice, Catalina Island’s Two Harbors seemed very good initially. The web site was readily available, all the sites had calendars indicating to us those that were booked and those were accessible. But after a number of emails back and forth, we decided that the primary weekend left accessible in the summer was the saturday and sunday she was traveling away to a Yoga Retreat. Therefore, regretfully, we determined that the vacation to Catalina Island would have to wait around for for a different time.

I am nevertheless on the hunt for an alternative campsite but this time I have no illusions. For me to find anything at all halfway reasonable that isn’t booked will likely mean exiting the state. I am planning to start looking real soon. I may even find something today or tomorrow. Just as soon as I get this blog completed, my writing tasks completed and the pages put in to my own sites. Well, possibly I will get to it tomorrow. But this week – I mean it – I will get that camping trip arranged.
